Nursery Matters
Clear, practical guidance for the people who care for our youngest children

Why Nursery Matters exists

Many of today’s nursery practitioners trained during, or just after, the Covid years. Courses moved online, placements were cut short, and the time spent learning alongside experienced colleagues was lost. None of that was their fault, but it left gaps that many are still quietly working to fill.

Nursery Matters is here to help fill them. It doesn’t stop at telling practitioners what to do. It explains why it matters, so that the everyday work of caring for young children makes sense and feels as important as it truly is.

What you notice matters

Every day in nurseries across the country, practitioners make hundreds of small decisions that shape children’s lives. What they notice, what they wonder about, and how they respond all build the culture of a setting, and that culture shapes every child in it.

Written for you

The books are written in plain, everyday language for nursery practitioners, room leaders, managers and owners. They draw on more than forty years in education, from running nurseries and training nursery nurses to inspecting schools, and they reflect the current EYFS framework and Ofsted expectations.

The Strong Foundations series

Six books covering what matters most in nursery life: noticing, safe sleep, working with parents, safeguarding, inclusion, and leadership.

Coming Soon: Planning in the Moment

Some of the best learning happens in the moment, when a practitioner notices what has caught a child’s interest and responds there and then. This book shows how to plan around children’s own curiosity, and how noticing, wondering and responding can turn ordinary moments into rich learning.
